SmoothWall Express is an open source firewall distribution based on the Linux operating system. Linux is the ideal choice for security systems; it is well proven, secure, highly configurable and freely available as open source code. SmoothWall includes a hardened subset of the Linux operating system, so there is no separate OS to install. Designed for ease of use, SmoothWall is configured via a web-based GUI, and requires absolutely no knowledge of Linux to install or use.
SmoothWall Express is intended for use by anyone from home users to systems administrators. Apart from the PC to run SmoothWall on, all that is required is an Internet connection, some simple networking equipment to connect the SmoothWall box to the rest of your private LAN, and the SmoothWall Express CD.
A quote from a review on Tom's Hardware: "Smoothwall Express 2.0 is a great firewall system right out of the box that will work well and provide more features than many users will ever need. The system is easy to install and configure, and the online help system will benefit nearly everyone."
Another review on NewsForge has even better things to say about SmoothWall Express 2.0.
