FreeBSD is an open source operating system based on 4.4 BSD Lite for Intel and AMD based PC hardware. FreeBSD works with a wide variety of peripherals and configurations.
A large collection of free third-party ported software is available. Over 10,500 ported applications, from editors to programming languages to graphical applications, make FreeBSD a powerful and comprehensive operating environment that extends far beyond what's provided by many commercial versions of UNIX.
The 4.11 release of FreeBSD is rock solid in terms of stability and speed. It is used by many web hosting companies and Internet Service Providers. However, if you're looking for cutting edge features such as SMP scalability and advanced networking, and are willing to accept a somewhat lower degree of system stability, you might consider FreeBSD 5.3 instead.
