FreeBSD is an open source operating system based on 4.4 BSD Lite for Intel and AMD based PC hardware. FreeBSD works with a wide variety of peripherals and configurations.
A large collection of free third-party ported software is available. Over 10,500 ported applications, from editors to programming languages to graphical applications, make FreeBSD a powerful and comprehensive operating environment that extends far beyond what's provided by many commercial versions of UNIX.
The 5.3 release of FreeBSD contains many cutting edge features like SMP scalability and advanced networking. However, it may not be as stable as the 4.11 release. If you are looking for the highest level of stability and speed, and do not need cutting edge features, you might want to consider FreeBSD 4.11 instead.
